Zoology: inspired by life, inspired for life

We are a thriving community of researchers, united by a fascination with the living world. Using novel interdisciplinary approaches, our mission is to understand how life evolves, how it functions, and how we can conserve it for the future.

We disseminate this knowledge through local, national and global networks of influence, to address the greatest challenges of our time: restoring and protecting biodiversity, enhancing food security and improving human health.

We pride ourselves on the outstanding quality of our research, its impact and the cutting-edge techniques we develop and apply. This range and diversity energizes our teaching. Associated organisations include the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, the Student Conference on Conservation Science and Cambridge Neuroscience.

Our 250 or so undergraduates, postgraduates, post-docs and externally-funded research fellows are the life blood of our Department. They are energised, eager to learn and deeply committed. As alumni they contribute to our worldwide networks of influence.

University Museum of Zoology 

Our Museum is one of Cambridge's major attractions, welcoming over 150,000 visitors a year. It houses an internationally significant collection of over 2,000,000 specimens spanning the entire animal kingdom. The Cambridge Biotomography Centre is also based at the Museum.
